This traditional mask represents a human head with scarifications on the temples and an elaborate hairstyle. This mask has no sacred function. It appears only during festivals related to visits by foreign dignitaries. The Yaourè mask can, however, influence the supernatural forces responsible for human suffering as well as prosperity, in order to restore the social and political imbalance that death can cause. This type of mask can sometimes feature two faces placed side by side, evoking twins. The external patina is typically smooth and dark. Yaourè masks are often surrounded by a serrated border that structures the mask and emphasizes the overall harmony of its forms. The Yaourè people have a strong sense of identity. Yaourè culture is influenced by its Baoulé and Gouro neighbors.
