Description
Makonde belly mask, from the ethnic group of Mozambique and Tanzania, made of hardwood with a thin, smooth, dark brown patina. This mask, called "ndimu," evokes the belly of a pregnant woman and was worn on the stomachs of male dancers, mimicking the stages and pains of childbirth during the "unyago" initiation ceremonies for girls and boys, marking their passage to adulthood. Each mask features scarifications carved on the chest and between the navel.
