Djimini mask with trunk (Central Ivory Coast)

200 000 CFA

Settled in Ivory Coast, the Djimini and Ligbi, who converted to Islam, were influenced by the Senufo. They borrowed elements from the Senufo, which they integrated into the masks associated with the "do" society. Just before the end-of-Ramadan festivities, if necessary, the mask will be repainted and coated with koro, a mixture of burnt foliage whose ashes are mixed with palm oil, red or white clay, henna, and a kola nut powder. This mixture will highlight the scarifications, facial features, and hairstyle. An ovoid face without a nose, with eyes and mouth only slightly incised, is framed by a horn on the top of which a bird perches. This ancient mask has a smooth, satiny brown patina.
