Description

This mask represents a villager, renowned for his skill in dance or his beauty. This portrait mask can also be called do or n'doma. The female head has a hairstyle in two large braided buns. The hair, eyebrows, scarifications (forehead, cheek, and mouth), and the fan-shaped beard are black. Kaolin highlights the eyes. The mask is made of wood with a dark, smooth patina.

The Baoulé people originate from central Ivory Coast. The Kpan Goli masks are considered the embodiment of life-giving mothers. Unlike the Kpwan Goli Kplin masks, women and children are encouraged to dance and sing with the Kpwan masks during celebrations. When not in use, these masks are kept in the bush.
